Special Agent John Tall Wolf of the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) describes his job like this “I work at the intersection of Native American and mainstream cultures. If there’s a four-car pile-up, I try to sort things out.”
The metaphor is particularly apt on the August morning in New Orleans when all the traffic lights turn green at the same time causing citywide gridlock and providing the perfect cover for a gang of eight men on motorcycles to rob the Thibodeaux State Bank. Normally, the FBI would have sole responsibility to investigate.
This time, though, John is called in because the robbers were decked out as Native Americans, a 21st century take on a war party. John raises the idea that the warpaint and feathers might be misdirection. Then a group calling itself Red Nation Rising claims credit for the robbery.
That name might be double entendre. Washington suspects that China might be at work in the shadows, testing cyberwarfare against the United States. John Tall Wolf and his FBI counterpart, Deputy Director Byron DeWitt, have to come up with answers, bag the crooks and make it fast.

Special Agent John Tall Wolf of the Bureau of Indian Affairs ends up in New Orleans when all the traffic lights turn green at the same time causing citywide gridlock and providing the perfect cover for a gang of eight men dressed up like Native Americans on motorcycles to rob a bank. As he’s working the case, another bank in another city gets robbed by the same crew, and the chase is on.

I enjoy the Tall Wolf books. John has a compelling backstory – to avoid an arranged marriage, his birth mother, a member of the Northern Apache Tribe, left him to die on a platform the wilderness near Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he was rescued by his adoptive parents, an Anglo and Hispanic couple. John is able to walk in both worlds, and I think it makes him a better detective. His girlfriend is a Canadian Mountie, and they are trying to figure out whether they can make a go of a bi-country relationship.

Some of the characters from the first book are back, and John meets more interesting people along the way. I hope some of them will appear in future stories. The book made time at the gym fly by, and I found myself wondering what was happening when I wasn’t reading it. I liked it so much that when I was done, I immediately picked up book 3 in the series.

War Party A John Tall Wolf Novel Book 2 edition by Joseph Flynn Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I've liked all of the books about John Tall Wolf. Nothing violent, just police procedural but with the variation of the hero of the story being part of the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs instead of the usual FBI or CIA. This was a good story line with an interesting twist.
Bureau of Indian Affairs Agent John Tall Wolf is called upon when a group of eight "Indians" robs a bank with automatic weapons, escaping on motorcycles while traffic snarls and power outages plague the first responders. All is not normal with these natives, and the power outages are not coincidental. John, at the request of the newly appointed Vice President of the United States, must work in cooperation with the FBI to figure out who the bank robbers are, and the sinister source and motive for the power outages. The action is fast moving and kept me flipping pages. We see the bank robberies from the side of law enforcement, and also from the robbers point of view.
I sincerely hope the third book of this series is not far from publication. I have much praise for Mr. Flynn's writing, and also for the editors and beta readers. It is a pleasure to read a book that has been so well checked for errors.
I have had the pleasure of developing an email relationshsip with joe. as such, he always sends me an email when one of his new books hits . he did that with WAR PARTY.

I absolutely love this current book. it is worth every minute I spent reading it. kind of early to wish for the next JOHN TALL WOLF book but I can't wait. the Tall Wolf books and the Jim McGill books by JOE are my absolute favorities. however, I have read most of his books and loved every one of them.

I believe a Jim McGill book is coming in 2014 and I will probably the first to purchase it.

any and all of his books are worth reading. he is a brilliant writer and comes up with stories that make sense and are so addictive and thrilling, it is impossible to put my away until I have finished each and every book. I HEARTILY RECOMMEND ALL OF HIS BOOKS. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
Joseph Flynn has written BIA special agent John Tall Wolf into a particularly binding corner. John has made his BIA boss agree he will never have to go to a reservation to work. Considering that precludes an enormous amount of real-estate and some interesting plotting possibilities; the only place the subtly malicious BIA director can send him is Alaska. There are no reservations there, except a small one, Metlakatla, I think.

John suspects his boss is Coyote. The Trickster has a mean streak. She's been bested by him one too many times and she is royally ticked off. The end of this book puts him out of her sphere of influence pretty well. Marlene wasn't a worthwhile adversary for John. He was always a step or two ahead of her, and saw through her. But she's still Director. What better way to get revenge on John than to send him to Alaska where the sun glinting off snow will cause his light-sensitive eyes real agonizing pain.

I gave this book four stars although it required a huge willings suspension of disbelief on my part. John is called in on a bank robbery because the robbers were dressed as Indians. They even got away on Indian Motorcycles. Even before he proved it, he was pretty sure the men were not Native American. When that was proved true, John and his RayBans should have been off the case. But the FBI, a Postal Inspector, and a collection paranoid alphabet agencies are all involved and somehow, John is still considered important to solving the case.

It was a good who dunnit. I didn't see most of the plot points coming, and adding the extra of the bad guys being tied to a sport was especially interesting. The show down in a stadium was one of my favorites of all time.

The reason for only 4 stars was because one of the bad guys in the conspiracy seemed to be tossed into the story arc for no reason other to hint at international intrigue. He didn't even have a line of dialogue. A shadowy, disgruntled Chinese guy, intimating international terrorism. This book would have been just fine without him.

This is a good read though. I like John Tall Wolf and his backstory is really good. But that pesky reservation phobia is a bit irritating when it belongs to a 6 foot 6 inch Indian who wears RayBans and looks as really bad A** as he truly is.
